Michael Sam Returns To CFL Team After Unexplained Absence - Deadspin
"...With no NFL prospects this offseason, Michael Sam had planned a stint in the CFL, until he abruptly left the Montreal Alouettes on June 12 without an explanation. Today, the defensive end returned to the team, telling the press that he had to deal with a personal matter. Montreal has already started its season, but Sam won't be playing right away. General manager Jim Popp says the player needs more time to prepare. ..." see full article

Michael Sam's Story May Not Have a Hollywood Ending - Bleacher Report
"...Some of you, holding a predisposition to dislike Sam because he's gay, won't understand what I'm about to say. Some of you, who understand nuance and human frailty, will get it.I believe that Sam has reached this point where he left the CFL's Montreal Alouettes last week with little explanation to the team because the pressure of being the first finally got to him. In this case, the pressure that came from becoming the first openly gay NFL player.Sam will always be a hero to me, but I also know he is made of flesh and blood. Like other pioneers in sports, he carried the weight of many people on his shoulders...." see full article

Is Michael Sam's career on the brink of extinction? - Bloguin (blog)
"...Michael Sam's NFL career was already on hiatus, but now that he has left the CFL's Montreal Alouettes, it's fair to wonder if the 25-year-old's professional football career could be on the verge of ending before it ever really started. I wouldn't be surprised if he returns. I'm surprised he left. I was very surprised. If he doesn't come back, I would think football's over for him, said Als general manager Jim Popp. He's the one that has to face that. But I don't think he doesn't want to play football. That's why he came here. Fair or not, Sam is already somewhat of a toxic commodity in the NFL. He brings a lot of attention and there's clearly a belief that his signing could invite distractions. That's something a lot of personnel people could tolerate if Sam were an elite prospect, but it's also becoming clear that he isn't. He's a borderline NFL player and it would take some time for him to adjust to the CFL game...." see full article

Michael Sam Left the CFL Because He Knew He Wouldn't Make the Team - The Big Lead
"...The latest theory concerning Sam's departure was that he simply wasn't good enough to make the roster, sensed this and left to save himself and the organization embarrassment. This particular scenario is gaining steam throughout the Als dressing room and, for that matter, the CFL.Sam was the co-defensive player of the year in the SEC in 2013, but failed to stick with the St. Louis Rams and Dallas Cowboys after getting drafted in the 7th round. Social media claimed Sam was being black-balled because he's gay, but it's increasingly looking like he just wasn't good enough...." see full article

Why did Michael Sam leave the CFL's Montreal Alouettes? -
"...How is a former SEC defensive player of the year, a guy who racked up 11 1/2 sacks and 19 tackles for loss in the toughest conference in the country, not able to stick with a Canadian league team? While there has been speculation that Sam's announcement before the 2014 draft that he is gay may be hurting his ability to make a team, there were also red flags about his play even before the draft.Senior Bowl executive director Phil Savage noted last year that Sam "did not look comfortable" trying to transition to outside linebacker during the week of practices leading up to the 2014 game and that would limit his value to pro clubs. ..." see full article

Michael Sam left Alouettes to avoid embarrassment of being cut: report - New York Daily News

"...Michael Sam's disappearing act in Montreal was due, in part, to his diminishing chances of making the Alouettes' roster.Sam, who signed a two-year deal with the CFL team last month, requested a leave of absence on Friday and hasn't been back. The team suspended Sam on Monday, a calculated move that allows the Alouettes to retain his rights while he's away from the team...." see full article

Michael Sam's departure, suspension discussed by Als: is he done in the CFL? - Yahoo Sports (blog)
"...At the moment, the odds seem against Sam ever returning to the Alouettes. Heading home for personal leave is one thing, and something that's usually supported by the CFL and its teams. For example, Edmonton Eskimos' kicker Grant Shaw was allowed to skip Friday's practice and Saturday's exhibition game in Fort McMurray for the birth of his first child. Players who take such leave usually provide at least somewhat of an indication of what it's for, though, and that's what makes Sam's exit so unusual; if he or his agent had simply said "he needs to be home to help a sick relative" or something, this wouldn't have been anywhere as big of a story. The radio silence from Sam's camp seems to indicate that something else is going on, and the longer Sam stays away, the more the chances of him returning seem to decrease. Even that's odd, though; if Sam had decided the CFL wasn't for him and just said that, he would have disappointed many, but it would have been understandable. (Even the quite-high rookie salary of $100,000 Canadian he's reportedly set to make if he sticks with the Alouettes is likely peanuts next to the numerous non-football opportunities he shouldd have in the U.S.) If that's what's happened, though, it doesn't seem to make much sense to not say it...." see full article
