Does Rick Perry have an exit plan? - Chicago Tribune

"...And it's always possible to find examples of candidates given up for dead who then rallied. Perry's campaign is talking about John McCain's implosion and revival in the 2008 cycle and Rick Santorum's out-of-nowhere Iowa surge in 2012.If Perry continues on until Iowa and if other candidates such as Bobby Jindal and Chris Christie also stay in it will be an indication that traditional winnowing of candidates might be in trouble. More likely? One or more of them will be long gone by New Year's Day, and the process will work as it has for decades meaning the parties will choose their nominees...." see full article or see all articles on this topic

Rick Perry's comeback bid is already facing major trouble

"...But Trump took center stage at last week's debate, while Perry failed to make the top 10 in opinion polls needed to make the televised event's stage. Instead, he and other low-polling candidates unveiled their policy positions at a forum ahead of the prime-time event. There Perry vowed to boost U.S. economic growth, secure the southern U.S. border with Mexico and tear up a nuclear agreement with Iran.Perry has also had to grapple with charges against him in an abuse-of-power case stemming from his time as governor...." see full article or see all articles on this topic

IS RICK PERRY ALREADY FINISHED?
"...So, obviously, closing the door on a single state doesn't a total collapse make. But pulling staff out of a key first primary state, this far out of the first round - it means something is, at least, seriously wrong. Rick Perry did not fare particularly well in last week's debates, though he had been working on lowering expectations earlier in the week. And now, as other Texans have emerged as front runners - specifically Ted Cruz, who also seems to be the heir apparent to The Donald's grassroots fortune, once Trump tires of this game - much of Perry's funding has dried up, and as a result, he's having to focus what few resources he has on states other than South Carolina. ..." see full article or see all articles on this topic

Rick Perry and the shortage of second acts in politics
"...But for Perry, the worst break of this cycle has been missing out on the main presidential debate. In 11th place, he just missed the cut and looked like he was going to be on the stage until a late rally by John Kasich forced him into the "happy hour" debate. That earlier candidates' forum was a lackluster affair, thoroughly dominated by Carly Fiorina, and Perry was denied a potentially huge publicity-generating opportunity to challenge Donald Trump directly.Perry has two remaining cards to play. First, while he has been among the Republican critics of recent Supreme Court decisions, he should be thankful for their Citizens United decision. His super PACs still have money and aren't handcuffed by the same contribution limits as his campaign. Super PACs kept Newt Gingrich and Rick Santorum in the running in 2012 long after they would have normally had to close up shop...." see full article or see all articles on this topic

Is this the end for Rick Perry?

"...If this is the end -- and Perry's super PAC support could well keep him on life support for a bit longer -- it would be a remarkable bit of timing: Perry entered the 2012 presidential race as its frontrunner on August 13, 2011 -- almost four years to the day when it's become clear that his second bid for the presidency has faltered badly. For Perry, that four year period speaks to just how important timing -- and performing -- are on the presidential level. And how fickle the public can be.At this time in 2011, Perry was the talk of the political world. He had yet to enter the race -- he did so on the day of the now-deceased Iowa Straw Poll --  but polling suggested he was widely regarded by voters as the conservative alternative to Mitt Romney that they had been shopping for...." see full article or see all articles on this topic

Rick Perry's Campaign: We're Not Dead Yet

"...But Perry loyalists argue that Perry, who was at the time the country's longest-serving governor, should not be counted out just yet. Perry campaign manager Jeff Miller confirmed to NPR that the campaign's payroll had been cut off but dismissed the speculation that the campaign was about to flatline. The Washington Post first reported the news. Many aides have kept working for Perry, even on an unpaid basis."As the campaign moves along, tough decisions have to be made in respect to both monetary and time related resources," Miller said in a statement. "Governor Perry remains committed to competing in the early states and will continue to have a strong presence in Iowa, New Hampshire and South Carolina.'..." see full article or see all articles on this topic

Why is Rick Perrys campaign flaming out so quickly?
"...Even all that might not have been enough to completely derail Perry's bid. There was still life in his campaign until he got on stage with the likes of Carly Fiorina, Bobby Jindal and Rick Santorum. Where they easily answered questions and fended off blows during the late-afternoon, second-tier debate, Perry seemed to flail every time he opened his mouth, as if he were so desperate to score points, he wanted to blurt out all of his well-practiced answers at once. What the public saw was a guy who didn't really seem in control of his own mouth. Asked in his opening question why Americans should give him another look, he gushed forth with a list of economic statistics from Texas, then closed with: I will assure you, as the governor of the state of Texas, and as those last four years have shown me, the preparation to be ready to stand on this stage and talk about those monetary policies, those domestic policies, and those foreign policies, Americans are going to see that I am ready to be that individual. ..." see full article or see all articles on this topic

IS RICK PERRY ON HIS WAY OUT? IS RAND PAUL?
"...If Perry bows out early again, this time it will not be due to debate performance, but rather, arguably, to debate process. His failure to make the cut for the prime time debate surely has contributed to his fundraising woes. And, as suggested above, his quest to make the cut may have induced more early spending than he anticipated.Perry entered the debates as number 11 in the polls. Thanks to Carly Fiorina's performance, and good to excellent performances by most of the prime time contestants, he may now rank lower than that. Too bad. Perry ranks well up my top 10 list...." see full article or see all articles on this topic

No White House for You, Rick Perry
"...There is a hardy saying in American politics: Campaigns don't end, they run out of money. Rick Perry's campaign has run out of money and can no longer pay its staff, who have been freed up to find work elsewhere. Part of the ending/running-out-of-money ritual requires an official spokesperson to bravely deny the obvious, the job of which has fallen to Katon Dawson, Perry's South Carolina state director. Dawson tells National Journal that the lack of pay will not stop them because We'll be able to live off the land for a while.  In fact, living off the land is what an invading army does in enemy territory when supplies are unavailable, seizing crops from the local farmers to feed its troops. That is not, you know, legal, nor does it offer a promising model for a presidential campaign, unless Perry's plan is to transition into a literal guerilla campaign. And, yes, Perry has previously declared sympathy for secession, but at the moment he lacks the insurrectionary support needed to carry out a policy of mass agricultural expropriation...." see full article or see all articles on this topic

Rick Perry's Financial Implosion
"...The shockingly early financial implosion (four years ago, Perry hadn't even announced his 2012 candidacy yet) is a potentially crippling blow for a candidate who, despite energetically campaigning in Iowa and elsewhere on the political circuit, has found little traction in the polls."We'll be able to live off the land for a while," predicted Katon Dawson, Perry's South Carolina state director. But while his official campaign has been reduced to a volunteer operation, a trio of independent pro-Perry super PACs remain well-heeled, making it less likely Perry will be forced to exit the race entirely."Oh God, yes, full steam ahead," said Austin Barbour, a senior adviser to Perry's super PACs. "Because we raised $16.8 million."The remarkable imbalance between the cash-strapped campaign and the flush super PAC will likely test the limits, already being pushed by other underfunded candidates, of how much responsibility can be pushed off onto unlimited-money outside groups...." see full article or see all articles on this topic

Rick Perry Stops Paying South Carolina Staff
"...Perry has struggled in his repeat bid for president in 2016. He raised a meager $1.1 million in the second quarter, and his campaign will depend almost entirely on his far-better-funded super PAC. Notably, Perry also missed the main debate stage last week, despite a weeks-long push of television ads by his super PAC in Iowa."Nothing has changed with South Carolina as far as the mission at hand of helping the governor become the nominee of the party," Dawson insisted. "Nothing has changed."Perry is scheduled to visit South Carolina on Thursday, Dawson said, and he is still planning a full slate of events both this week and later in August."As the campaign moves along, tough decisions have to be made in respect to both monetary- and time-related resources," said Jeff Miller, Perry's campaign manager, in an email. "Governor Perry remains committed to competing in the early states and will continue to have a strong presence in Iowa, New Hampshire, and South Carolina. The governor is also looking forward to his trips to South Carolina this Thursday and to Iowa next week."..." see full article or see all articles on this topic

In wake of another theater shooting, keep the focus on stronger gun laws - Minneapolis Star Tribune
"...Some, including a few Republican presidential hopefuls, suggest that the answer lies in eliminating gun-free zones. They believe that if more people carry guns, they can better defend themselves and others during attacks. But just try to imagine how having more guns and cross-firing in a darkened theater would improve safety.Just hours before the Louisiana theater shooting, President Obama told the BBC that he is frustrated that the U.S. does not have common-sense gun safety laws, even in the face of repeated mass killings. We share his frustration. Most Americans don't want to feel that they're in a police state everywhere they go. Required airport-type security at movie theaters seems excessive. But at the same time, government and law enforcement must also focus on sensible ways to restrict access to firearms to those who pose a risk to public safety...." see full article or see all articles on this topic

Guns and the Two Americas - New York Times

"...Is no place safe? Actually, several places are. You want protection in a country that allows a deranged man to get an assault weapon to hunt down innocent people in a public space? Go to the airport that bubble of gun-free security. Or go to a major-league baseball game, or a stadium in the National Football League. Our big league venues may be engaging only in security theater, as critics assert, but their owners don't think so. They now mandate metal detectors to snag weapons, and most of them even ban off-duty cops from bringing guns to the games.Nationwide, if you want to lessen your chances of getting shot, stay out of the South. The South is the most violent region in the United States, and also the place with the highest rate of gun ownership. More guns, easily obtained by the mentally ill, religious fanatics and anti-government extremists, mean more gun deaths...." see full article or see all articles on this topic

Watch what happens when regular people try to use handguns in self-defense - Washington Post (blog)

"...In the wake of the Sandy Hook school shooting, the National Rifle Association proposed putting more guns in schools. After a racist shot up a Charleston prayer group, an NRA board member argued for more guns in church. And now predictably, politicians and gun rights advocates are calling for guns in movie theaters after a loner killed two people at a theater in Louisiana. The notion that more guns are always the solution to gun crime is taken seriously in this country. But the research shows that more guns lead to more gun homicides -- not less. And that guns are rarely used in self-defense.Now a new study from researchers at Mount St. Mary's University sheds some light on why people don't use guns in self-defense very often. As it turns out, knowing when and how to apply lethal force in a potentially life-or-death situation is really difficult...." see full article or see all articles on this topic

Adriana Cohen: We need more measures than just gun control | Boston Herald - Boston Herald
"...Chicago has the strictest gun regulations in the nation and the highest gun violence. Why? Because criminals ignore the law and get the bulk of their firearms on the black market or over state lines. If the Second Amendment was abolished tomorrow, it wouldn't stop murderers or terrorists from obtaining guns.Let's remember that heroin, crack and meth are banned substances. And how is our War on Drugs going? In Massachusetts alone, there's a massive opioid problem. What our country learned from the mass shootings at Columbine, Newtown and most recently at a military center in Chattanooga, Tenn., and a movie theater in Lafayette, La., is that Gun-Free Zones are very dangerous places. They leave civilians including our children and military defenseless when a crazy mass shooter or terrorist shows up.So what can we do?Schools can hire on-site security guards who are fully vetted, armed and trained to protect our kids, teachers and staff. Movie theaters can also hire private armed security. Personally, I'd pay an extra buck a ticket to increase public safety...." see full article or see all articles on this topic

This could have prevented Lafayette movie theater killings

"...The gun lobby's response of "more guns" is predictable (and critical to its industry's financial prospects), but Americans who are truly concerned about this violence are asking a different question: How can we keep those who are in crisis, and at an elevated risk of violence, from obtaining firearms? A policy recently enacted in California, the Gun Violence Restraining Order, or GVRO, would seem to hold enormous promise for those looking to stop the next gunman before he can carry out his plans. The GVRO is based on the same principle as a domestic violence restraining order. It would allow family members and/or law enforcement to go before a judge and request that guns be temporarily removed from an individual who is likely to be dangerous toward himself and/or others (while allowing for due process)...." see full article or see all articles on this topic

Louisianas Gun Problem
"...Louisiana, the state where this occurred, has some of the weakest  if not the weakest  gun laws in the nation. To give just one example, Louisiana recently enacted an NRA-backed state constitutional amendment providing that [t]he right of each citizen to keep and bear arms is fundamental and shall not be infringed, and that any restriction on this right will be met with maximal skepticism by the states' courts. The amendment also stripped out language permitting the state legislature to prohibit the carrying of weapons concealed on a person. Similarly, Louisiana does not require gun dealers to obtain a state license. It does not limit the number of guns that may be purchased at one time. It forbids local governments from regulating firearms. And it has no laws restricting assault weapons or .50 caliber rifles. One study of all 50 states' gun laws concluded that Louisiana has the laxest gun laws of any state...." see full article or see all articles on this topic

Gun violence: An American epidemic
"...As many as 91 percent of Americans support expanded background checks to help keep guns out of dangerous hands. With that kind of majority, our elected officials have a responsibility to actually do something about it to not only offer prayer as Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal did but to pass effective legislation. But this time, I am not angry. And that scares me. This time I feel helpless and I want to run away. Maybe it's because I'm hosting a friend from New Zealand where they don't have the epidemic of gun-related violence like we have here.It has made me think about moving, about leaving the country.Imagine what life would be like not having to worry whenever I take my kids to see a movie or send them off to school.Imagine life without gun violence...." see full article or see all articles on this topic

If You Live in Louisiana Youre Nearly Twice as Likely to Be Killed by a Gun
"...Advocates claim that Louisiana's high rate of gun violence is a product of its lax gun laws and poor regulation of the firearms industry. Gun owners are not required to obtain a license or register their weapons, and the state does not restrict assault weapons or high-capacity magazines. According to the Law Center to Prevent Gun Violence, gun dealers are not required to obtain a state license, conduct employee background checks, or comply with any security or anti-theft regulations. The state has continued to loosen its gun laws in recent years. A pair of bills signed by Gov. Bobby Jindal last year expanded its existing stand your ground law and made it legal for those with concealed-carry permits to bring guns into restaurants that serve alcohol. Gov. Jindal has also signed new legislation allowing guns in places of worship and introducing lifetime concealed-carry permits...." see full article or see all articles on this topic

Gun laws, not gun-free zones, are the real problem

"...Now it's routine for gun lobby commentators and politicians to blame mass shootings on the existence of so-called gun-free zones. This is a red herring, pushed by the gun lobby to advance a guns everywhere agenda, which insults the dead and mocks the living by reducing tragedy to a mere trope. It's past time to lay this fallacy to rest.In our case, Virginia Tech had routine police presence in and around campus, which the gunman even accounted for in his planning. It's pointless to debate what hypothetically could have happened if a student or teacher carried a concealed firearm in Norris Hall that day, because nobody will ever know. But such a debate misses the main point: Mary, and everyone else, would have been far safer if the shooter had been unable to obtain a gun in the first place...." see full article or see all articles on this topic

Right-Wingers' Solution to Movie Theater Shootings: More Guns | The New Republic - The New Republic
"...But the logical response is not to allow guns everywhere, as the presence of guns increases aggression and the odds of deadly violence; rather, it's to further restrict gun ownership, and outlaw gun possession in public whether concealed or carried openly. Houser reportedly had an old criminal record and mental health issues:And yet, he still managed to get his hands on a gun. At a gun show, perhaps? Online? There are many ways to get your hands on a gun, legally or otherwise. We won't be safer until doing so becomes much more difficult. It's rather simple logic, but bears repeating: You can't bring a gun into a crowded movie theater if you don't own one in the first place...." see full article or see all articles on this topic

Rick Perry's surprisingly honest speech about Texas' racist past - Washington Post (blog)

"...Instead, Perry focuses on the 14th Amendment, which the federal courts have tried to use to force racial equality on recalcitrant states. It wasn't just a shift in rhetoric that Perry advocated, though. He also said that there is a flaw in the argument for states' rights when it comes to race. That's an important admission. Many Republicans emphasize the rights of states over the federal government. As Wonkblog has previously reported, though, many people of color continue to feel that federal power is the only way to guarantee them a fair shot when it comes to health care, education and other issues...." see full article

Rick Perry Reluctantly Accepts Gays in the Military - Mother Jones

"...The Rick Perry of the 2016 campaign is sporting a new look, between the Buddy Holly frames, the speeches demanding that his party reconcile itself with its history and appeal to African Americans, and the denouncements of Donald Trump's comments about immigrants. And on gay rights, while he's still far from marching in a pride parade last month he criticized the Supreme Court's decision to legalize same-sex marriage nationwide Perry is singing a different tune on President Obama's repeal of Don't Ask, Don't Tell. As flagged by Bloomberg Politics, Perry appeared Sunday on ABC's This Week, and when George Stephanopoulos asked if he stood by that ad, Perry sounded as though he still disliked the policy but was resigned to the fact that Don't Ask, Don't Tell wouldn't be restored. "I have no reason to think that is going to be able to be done," Perry said. "I think you know, that clearly has already you know, the horse is out of the barn."..." see full article

Rick Perry's Response To SCOTUS' Obamacare Ruling Was Probably The ... - Bustle
"...And now for some news that will come as no surprise: Republican presidential candidates were all sorts of disappointed Thursday when the Supreme Court voted to uphold Obamacare, allowing health care subsidies to remain in every state. The ruling was a huge victory for the Obama administration and the Democratic party as a whole, so naturally many within the GOP took the opportunity to make some major digs at SCOTUS. But not everyone was slamming the Supreme Court. Rick Perry had the smartest reaction to the Obamacare ruling; because unlike the other 2016 Republican candidates, he didn't blame the Court he blamed the White House.Yep, while most of the GOP was busy attacking SCOTUS for keeping the Affordable Care Act intact, Perry set himself apart by criticizing President Obama instead. And whether or not you agree with the Texas politician on that front, it was arguably a very wise move politically, given the tone he'd like to strike for his 2016 presidential run. In an official statement on his campaign website, Perry writes:..." see full article

Will smart-looking glasses do the trick for Rick Perry? - Los Angeles Times
"...Is Rick Perry trying to pull off a similar trick with his glasses? Ever since the former Texas governor announced his candidacy for the Republican presidential nomination last week, there's been much talk about whether Perry 2.0 will be discernibly smarter than the candidate we saw back in 2011. His famous "oops" moment when he announced during a debate that he would shut down three major government agencies but couldn't remember the third one sealed his reputation as a something of a good-old-boy airhead. But today, wearing dark-rimmed, nerdy-cum-arty frames, Perry looks, if not exactly professorial, at least like he wouldn't stand out at a gallery opening...." see full article

The Legal Trouble That Could Haunt Rick Perry's Presidential Campaign - Mother Jones

"...But as he launches his second run for the White House, Perry faces ongoing legal trouble back home in Texas stemming from his time as governor. Last August, a grand jury indicted Perry for abusing his power as governor. Perry has repeatedly requested that judges dismiss the case, only to be rebuked as the allegations progress toward a trial one that could play out during the heat of the GOP primaries. The case is a bit convoluted, but it stems from Perry's 2013 effort to oust a county district attorney who investigates public corruption.Texas has an unusual system of keeping politicians in check. Can Rick Perry close the deal? - Washington Post

"...And this is the other thing about Rick Perry: As confident and swaggering as he can seem these days, there are still moments when he can seem lost. Not exactly lost in thought. Just lost, not unlike he appeared to be on stage during the debates in 2011 far from Texas and the persona he created there, standing before crowds that were not always friendly, not necessarily buying what he was selling. We never had a lot of new things, Perry says finally, and now he's back to the familiar persona and stump-speech stories, talking about how the harsh life of west Texas taught him how to handle adversity, his father's stoicism, and on until an aide tells him that it's time to go...." see full article
